No Hope, Arkansas
He never knew his real father, Bill Blythe, who died in
a car accident a few months before he was born, just
after they moved to Hope, Arkansas, where his
mother raised him.
Reading at 3
She recognized his intelligence when he learned to
read by the age of 3.  Young Bill was enrolled in school
and demonstrated a zeal for learning.  In the second
grade he raised his hand so much one teacher
regarded him as a pest and gave him a D in behavior.
That was the last poor grade he ever received.
Touched by JFK
When he was 16, he
represented his school at
an event attended by
President Kennedy.  Bill
had ideas on what he
wanted to say but when
he touched his hand he
was speechless.

Determined to
make a better life
Bill continued to excel as a
student and attended
Georgetown University, in
Washington D.C. to study
government.  After
Georgetown, he won a
scholarship to study in
England, then enrolled at
Yale Law School, where
he met a law student from
Chicago named Hillary
Rodham.

Papa was a rolling stone
His mother studied to become a nurse.  She remarried to Roger Clinton, who spent
his nights drinking and gambling.  The family lived in fear when he was drinking.
When Bill was just five, his stepfather came home drunk and fired a gun at his
mother, fortunately missing her.  When Bill was fourteen, he finally was able to
confront his stepfather and warned him never to touch his mother again.  He was
able to make peace with him later in life.
