Growing up poor
Born in his parent’s apartment upstairs at
the bakery where his father worked.
The big family meal on Sunday consisted
of fried liver, and they ate on the soup
bone the rest of the week.
Father a dreamer
His father was a drinker and a dreamer
who spent his life chasing jobs and
pursuing the big sale, which never
seemed to come.  When he was eleven he
found him passed out drunk on the
snowy porch.  He somehow carried him
into bed and never told his mother, but
the memory never left him.
Nomadic childhood
The family moved at least 10 times
before his 10th birthday.  As a
consequence of this nomadic boyhood,
he had few lasting friendships except
with his older brother.
Optimistic but private
This quiet boy depended on himself and
realized as children of alcoholics often
do, that life can change in a twinkling.
He was usually upbeat but rarely allowed
others to intrude into his inner life.
Loving, Optimistic mother
His mother was extraordinarily optimistic
and adored him, and he believed she had
saintlike qualities.  She never let any of
their hardships stand in the way of his
happiness, optimism and his dreams.
Read to Achieve
She taught him to read long before he
went to school.  At age five, he read
aloud to his parents a newspaper story of
a notorious bombing in San Francisco.  His
father was so proud he brought in the
neighbors and had him read it again.
Success by Optimism
This quiet young boy later went on to
become an athlete, actor, announcer
and politician.  He ultimately became one
of the most revered Presidents.
Warming up the Cold War
His irrepressible optimism, and dreams of
a better world, contributed to winning
the cold war.  A key factor was his vision
of a star wars missile defense system,
that most scientists said was impossible.
Nonetheless, attempts by the soviet
union to counteract this bluff, spent
them into oblivion.
The Great Communicator
This president became known as “The
Great Communicator”.  He often took
his message to the people in TV fireside
chats, modeled after his idol Franklin
Roosevelt.  He was noted for having
personal relationships with virtually every
congressman and would not hesitate to
work the phones to make persuasive calls
to push through legislation.
